What does CPCB certification require?

CPCB requires a compostable plastic to satisfy several criteria under industrial composting conditions: it must disintegrate physically within about 12 weeks, biodegrade into carbon dioxide, water and biomass within six months, and pass ecotoxicity tests so the finished compost supports healthy plant growth. It also limits heavy metals and regulated substances. Only material meeting all criteria can be considered compostable to the standard.

The standard exists so that a compostable claim reflects verified behaviour rather than an assumption. Each requirement addresses a different failure mode a buyer would otherwise have to trust on faith.

Why is disintegration tested separately from biodegradation?

Disintegration and biodegradation are different things. Disintegration is the physical breaking apart of the material so it is no longer visible in the finished compost, checked at around 12 weeks. Biodegradation is the chemical conversion of the polymer into carbon dioxide, water and biomass by microorganisms, measured over up to six months.

This is a crucial caveat for buyers. Certification to CPCB confirms performance under industrial composting, so the material needs to reach that kind of facility to behave as certified. It does not promise breakdown in a landfill or in open litter.

What does the ecotoxicity requirement protect against?

Ecotoxicity testing checks that the compost produced from the material is safe for plants and soil. A plastic could technically disintegrate and biodegrade yet leave behind residues that inhibit germination or plant growth. The standard guards against that by requiring plant growth tests and limits on heavy metals.
